Crowes recording in Nashville, TN studio May 1997 The Tennessean 5/22/97 [submitted by Angela Guillory] Black Crowes Fly into a New Nashville Studio The Black Crowes (Hard to Handle) yesterday finished up a week or so of recording at a new Music Row studio with L.A. ties. The Crowes were here working on a new album at Ocean Way Studio, opened several months ago by Gary Belz and Allen Sides. Sides owns a studio with the same name in L.A., and it's considered the hottest music studio in Southern California. The Crowes are the first major out-of-town rock act to record at the Nashville Ocean Way Studio. Part of the reason they came here is that co-producer Mike Wanchek, in John Mellencamp's band, lives in Indiana. And the boys used Nashville engineer David Leonard, who co-produced and engineered the Indigo Girls latest record. The Crowes also surprised the crowd at Jack's Guitar Bar on Nolensville Road Saturday night when they showed up at a gig for local band Backwaters. Crowes lead singer Chris Robinson got up and sang one, sometime around 2 a.m., much to the delight of the 20 or 30 folks who were left. Next month, the Crowes go out to do at least 26 dates headlining the Further Festival, which puts them on the road with Bruce Hornsby, Bob Weir's Ratdog and others. The Tennessean 5/22/97
