Washington D.C. concert review 11/9/96 Washington D.C. concert review 11/9/96 show submitted by Kelly Friess Oh my god.....what a show. I know it's a little late to review, but I just got back. And that Washington D.C. show definetly marked my 30th show as my favorite show of all time. What a phenomenon!! It was truly magical... something definetly "to be savored". I loved everything about it. They played in a place that had a capacity of 1,015 people (according to the building inspector anyways). It was a huge, dark bar. A very appropriate intimate setting for the Crowes. Just the way I love to see them. The only other show that I could compare to this one was when they did their mini tour before Amorica under assumed names like "O.D. Jubilee Band"....saw them in a small club in Detroit that literally only held about 700 people. So, in a small place like that, sitting on someone's shoulders, I was literally eye level with Chris and close enough to reach out and touch him. Anyways, back to the D.C. show. It was just extraordinary!! Chris was in a great mood (until someone threw a dime at him and he told them that they were the type of person to....blah, blah, blah..... then kill themselves). But, he jumped right back into a good mood by joking ("...what if I came to your work and threw shit at you?") They opened up the show with one of my favorite remakes by the Crowes; Feelin' Alright which just started off the show with an already overjoyed crowd. I think that definetly had to factor into the equation as being one of my favorite shows, the crowd. The last couple of shows, I managed to plant myself right next to some real assholes... not like this crowd. A lot of politeness, no one would stand in front of you (it seemed anyways) very considerate, a lot of passing and sharing. It was like everyone was in a good mood. Must have been that D.C. water or something (although it could have had to do with the killer drinks that they were serving at the bar). They really got a lot of use out of Ed that night, which... the more ED the better!! He can really jam on that keyboard! Then, after that remarkable opener, they break into a astounding rendition of Downtown Moneywaster, another fav. Now the crowd is really ecstatic! Then they bust into Share the Ride, a fun crowd pleaser. Mellow Down Easy to follow (it just kept getting better and better) Then, to slow things down to an appropriate tempo, they impressed me once again with another beautiful song; Descending (another fav). Then they brought out Warren for a 20 minute highly orgasmic rendition of Dreams. It was so beautiful, so perfect, the songs, the lights, the crowd, I can remember looking up at that whole scene and saying this is it... this is heaven.... this is just what heaven is like, and Chris is Jesus and he sings all the time, and just when you think it couldn't be any more perfect, it just gets better. It's like Chris knows me (us) and knows what I like and plays what I (we) want to hear just at the right time. (sorry for the deepness). Anyways, since I've seen how much space I've already used up, I guess I'll have to do the quickie review for the rest of the show. They played a bunch more jams. Black Moon Creeping was next, Mr. Spaceman (I didn't like this song at first, but it's definitely warming up to me). Evil Eye (a fav off of 3S), ummmm... Think N Thin, Sloppy Drunk (I love when they play this song!! - I could hear it every night!!) First time I've ever heard Boomer's Story, it was very pretty. Name Like Music, Hard to Handle and for an encore, How Much for Your Wings and Remedy. I was a little surprised by the encore, would have liked to hear at least one more duzie like Happy or She or maybe even the Weight would have been good. I took of picture of the venue the next day in the light. It seriously looks like a burned down crack house in a really bad neighborhood. All I could do was smile!! This was also the first time I tried to tape the show. I don't have fancy equipment or anything, I just used a little dictaphone type recorder. It turned out better than I expected, but still, I would really, really, really, really like to get my hands on a good copy of the show.......so, if any of you experienced tapers taped the show, PLEASE e-mail me personally and lets trade something, anything!! I even have an extra copy of the Storytellers!!! I really would like to have a good copy of this show. Got caught in the snow storm in Cleveland on the way back to Detroit, so we stayed in Cleveland on Sunday (ironically, it was the same hotel we stayed at in Cleveland when the Crowes were there, right by the venue, Big Head Todd was playing there Sunday night!!). Sorry to take up so much space. I just couldn't help myself. One more show for the year, VEGAS here I come!! All set to party at the JOINT! Peace to you all, Kelly
